Revert sidebar menu items to always be displayed

Recommended Posts

While the new theme is amazing, there is only one concern I have- and that's the sidebar.

Currently, items under "Browse" and "Activity" are hidden under mouse over actions, meaning it is not immediately clear what each item contains. Generally this is fine when there is a need to conserve space, but there is currently ample vertical space in the sidebar, meaning there is no need to hide items in dropdowns.

And generally, it is bad practise to include hover actions when not needed (Souce: http://uxmovement.com/navigation/why-hover-menus-do-users-more-harm-than-good/)

Yes, it does look pretty, but this is one time trading off function for minimalism doesn't work to the site's benefit.

With the following lines of CSS inserted into the "Custom CSS" file that is included in IPB will have the menu items expanded by default while not affecting anything else on the site.

.ipsNavBar_primary > ul > li .ipsNavBar_secondary {
    display: block;
    visibility: initial;

End result:

I'm using a Chrome plugin called Stylus to make some CSS edits for now.
We should share our snippets.

Add some whitespace around forum area:

#ipsLayout_contentArea {
    padding: 0 8%;

Nice! Boxed layout is always nice. I think the magic number for boxed layouts is something like this:

#ipsLayout_contentArea {
    max-width: 1170px;
    margin: auto;

I think that's from bootstraps default container width, so personally that feels pretty comfortable to me. On wider screens, I'm sure it won't look that great though.
