Programs closing when VNC is closed?

Question

Hey guys

I'm running Debian on a VPS with XFCE Desktop Environment & TigerVNC installed.

Sometimes my VNC Viewer displays an all black screen. (Still investigating this)
So I need to restart VNCserver. I thought VNC server is just for viewing, and things continue to run when it's off
It sees like when I kill the VNC process (vncserver -kill :1), programs running on the VPS also close.
Because after I restart vncserver and connect, they aren't open anymore.

Is that normal? How can keep the programming running continuously?

Personally I use lxde and tightvncserver, I find this has the best success with not black screening. Let me know if you need help setting it up.

Thanks. May try switching to TightVNC.
I take it you got blackscreen issue with other combos?

I'm fairly certain the VNC process runs the window display system and user environment. So killing the process will kill the user environment as well as any displays. Don't stop the VNC process.

I thought XFCE handled the 'display system and user environment'? Makes sense though.

I believe VNC will spawn an XFCE instance which itself handles the display system and user environment.

I believe it's a power management settings issue. it's a weird bug where the server attempts to turn off the "monitor" and then black your screen out.

I don't know the solution offhand, but shoot me a message on Discord, I can probably sort it for you. This will solve you having to kill the vncserver process, which is what is ending your programs.

The issue is that screensaver is enabled I’m pretty sure. Disable/remove and it will stop @YoHoJo
